Premiere screening - FASHIONCLASH Festival

During FASHIONCLASH Festival 2024, three fashion films—m i k, A Breathe Moment, and Purification—premiered as part of the festival’s ongoing commitment to fashion film development. The films were screened as part of the 'Awards + Premiere' at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht on Saturday 16 November 2024.

These films showcase the power of fashion storytelling through film, adding a unique dimension to the festival’s multidisciplinary program. Both A Breathe Moment and m i k received an additional assignment to incorporate participation into their creative process.

1. A Breathe Moment (by Jodie Cranen, Leda Spiranec, Povilas Gegevicius & Hsin Min Chan) follows workers caught in a relentless cycle, attempting to reclaim control within an unyielding system.

2. Purification (by Tobias Van Nieuwenhove, Coco Simons & Tyna Le) presents a dystopian tale of two figures from opposing elements, grappling with their environment in a struggle for purification.

3. m i k (by Pablo Salvador Willemars, Klaar Straatman & Lianca van der Merwe) reimagines the 1994 Dutch educational TV series Ik Mik Loreland, exploring non-verbal communication through abstract visual storytelling.

Recap - FASHIONCLASH Fashion Film Bootcamp 2024

On June 4, 2024, the second edition of the FASHIONCLASH Fashion Film Bootcamp took place in Maastricht, bringing together emerging creatives from the Benelux to explore the intersection of fashion and film. The intensive one-day event featured workshops and brainstorming sessions with industry experts Lisa Konno (fashion designer & filmmaker), Puck Litaay (film director), and Sam Bassett (head of fashion film at SHOWstudio). Participants worked in interdisciplinary teams to develop initial concepts for a fashion film.

One week later, on June 12, the teams pitched their ideas in an online session, where three projects were selected to receive funding and mentorship for production. The winning teams were all awarded a €5000 budget and professional guidance to bring their vision to life. The three completed films were set to premiere during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2024 at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht.

Continuing FASHIONCLASH’s commitment to fashion film, this initiative fosters new talent, providing a collaborative platform for young designers, artists, and filmmakers. The winning films will also have the opportunity to be submitted to international festivals in 2025.

Open Call: Join workshops & Win a budget to make a fashion film!

Are you interested to learn more about filmmaking, get inspired by working together with makers from other disciplines and get the chance to actually co-create a fashion film? This is your chance!

On Tuesday 4 June 2024, a 1-day Fashion Film Bootcamp will take place in Maastricht, including workshops and brainstorm sessions with industry professionals Lisa Konno (fashion designer & film maker), Puck Litaay (film director ) and Sam Bassett (head of fashion film SHOWstudio). During this day, a number of small teams will be put together to start the brainstorm and eventually develop a concept for a fashion film. Each composed team will consist of a mix of disciplines and backgrounds.

One week after the Fashion Film Bootcamp, on Wednesday 12 June (19:00 – 20:00), all teams are invited to pitch their proposal in an online meeting. 1 team will be awarded with a budget to realize the film under guidance (and in collaboration) with an experienced filmmaker. The brand-new fashion film will premiere during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2024 on Friday 15 November at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht.

In 2023, we organized the Fashion Film Bootcamp for the first time. The concept of ‘The Leap’ won the pitch and the film premiered during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2023. You can watch a BTS- short documentary of the Fashion Film Bootcamp and recording day, made by Vero Schoberer.

‘The Leap’ has been included in the selection for FASHIONCLASH Tilburg and Fashion Film Festival Amsterdam 2024.

Who can join?

The Fashion Film Bootcamp is a collaborative project to co-create a new fashion film. Please note this project is not an application for funding or individual mentoring! The project is open to all recently graduated designers, artists, art students, self-taught makers, etc. from the Benelux. Experience in filmmaking is not required; motivation for participation, availability, flexibility and interest in working with others is more important. Your application consists of a short motivation for participation in the project and a completed registration form, including a short CV, biography and visual portfolio.

Concept pitches

After the workshops, each group continues to work on their concept and pitch for a week. FASHIONCLASH will select a project, together with the workshop providers, that is convincing in terms of content and feasible in production.

13 June– 1 November 2024
Production phase
FASHIONCLASH is the overall coordinator, manages the budget and is overall end-responsible of the project. The winning team is guided in filming and editing by an experienced film maker and receives a budget of €5000 to make the short film.

Friday 15 November 2024
Premiere during FASHIONCLASH Festival (15- 17 November)
Lumiére Cinema, Bassin 55 – Maastricht
The premiere of the film will take place during the opening night of FASHIONCLASH Festival on Friday 15 November at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht. During this evening, 5 finalists of the Fashion Film program will also be shown. This is a good time to present the film to an international audience!

After FASHIONCLASH Festival 2024
After the festival, the film can be submitted to other (fashion)film festivals for 2025. A budget has been reserved for this to pay the entry fees. FASHIONCLASH can advise on festivals and how to approach them.

Context

Fashion Film
The fashion (short) film has become an established medium in which designers and brands are presenting their ethics and aesthetics. In this digital era, it is one of the more effective and sustainable ways to capture a fashion narrative and to reach a wide audience via online platforms and festival all over the globe. Besides the fashion film genre, there has been a rise of digital fashion and other audiovisual ways of presenting fashion in recent years. Designers have been digitally presenting their work in the form of a video or film, out of necessity or because they choose audiovisual tools to present their work.

Fashion Film & FASHIONCLASH
As an interdisciplinary platform, FASHIONCLASH has always paid attention to film by presenting fashion films at FASHIONCLASH Festival, by producing films and collaborating with filmmakers and organizations. In 2016, in collaboration with MoMu Antwerp and Vlaams Cultuurhuis De Brakke Grond, the Act! Cut! Play! project took place, resulting in creation of four innovative fashion films that reached over 30 festivals worldwide and gathered 15 awards.

In 2017, FASHIONCLASH organized FFFF, the first festival dedicated to fashion film in the Netherlands. After that, a number of film projects were realized, such as Off the Top of My Hat in 2021, with Luca Tichelman and Rens de Waal, in co-creation with teenagers & young adults from Tilburg. In 2022, the participation project Moving Portraits was initiated, with STUDIO AKATAK and Mulas Hybrid House. In 2023, FASHIONCLASH organized the Fashion Film Bootcamp for the first time with 25 participants and workshops by Diek Pothoven (creative director MARTAN/ CZAR), Daniel van Hauten (film maker) and Jeroen Mourmans (screen writer).

By creating these projects, FASHIONCLASH continues to stimulate development of fashion film and provide a platform for up-and-coming film enthusiasts.
