Souheila Chalabi
Les Souvenirs du Bled
Souheila Chalabi, is a Franco-Algerian multidisciplinary artist based between Paris and Amsterdam. She creates immersive installations combining video, textiles, writing and sound to explore the complexities of diasporic identities and family memories. Her aesthetic language is rooted in the everyday objects and artefacts of her family, embracing their shared understanding of “kitsch” to affirm an undervalued cultural hybridity.
‘Les souvenirs du Bled’ is a testament to Souheila Chalabi's Algerian heritage, Parisian upbringing, and a mosaic of multicultural experiences. Each embroidered carpet is a kaleidoscope of memories, weaving together elements of kitsch, daily life objects and popular culture. These textiles become vibrant storytellers, resonating not only with Souheila’s personal journey but also with the collective memories of those who navigate the intricate path of cultural hybridity.
